Erik's Pulse has been published. Information Overload I've been operating in some kind of information overload mode in the last few days. It all started when I decided to listen to various podcasts while doing my early morning blog scans. I must be crazy. I'm using Doppler and WinAmp, with a custom podcast view. The next version of NewzCrawler will support enclosures. Yeah! Itsy Bitsy Little Utilities I recently stumbled on various freeware Windows utilities which I find quite useful:
  • Mp3 Tag Tools, a MP3 ID3 tag editor. I use it to keep my tags in sync. A necessity if you use multiple MP3 players like I do.
  • Ping Plotter, a nice alternative to traceroute.
  • Empty Temp Folders, a temporary directories/files cleaner. Finally, a simple way to get rid of the crap left over by too many applications.
  • Audacity, a cross-platform sound editor/recorder.
  • AVG, a virus checker. It has now permanently replaced Norton AntiVirus on all my machines.

Bad Timing

Bad Timing Unless you've been living in a cocoon, you've probably heard that Diego's company is reaching the end of the rope. Diego is left looking for the next big thing. I've known Diego for a while now, and I really like the lad. It doesn't hurt that he's one hell of a Java developer. As soon as I heard of the imminent demise, I went to work on a way for me to acquire his company's technology assets and more importantly, Diego himself. I have several options still in play, but timing could not have been worse. My liquidity is at a all-time low as I recently shuffled all of my assets around in order to prepare for our move to Europe in Q1. I'm still looking at possibilities with my bank in Europe, but it is a slow and tedious process. Never the less, if you're interested, like me, in investing in Diego, please do. I'd hate to see all of his work go to waste.

Speed Traps?

If anybody's interested…
This is what my phone looks like today.
[@505]
Speed Traps? I found the following:
The settings for radar speed traps detector. Your Nokia cell phone can be programmed to pick up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the message alert tone. ( Doesn't work with Nokia 7110! )
  1. Enter your menu
  2. Select settings
  3. Select security settings
  4. Select closed user group
  5. Select on
  6. Enter 00000
  7. Press ok
  8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds your phone will display a radar sign with five zero's next to it. It is now activated.
Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this function. The Cell Phone info display needs to be de-activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell Info display. Each time you turn off your phone, or even each time you loose contact with your carrier, you'll have to activate it again… It is done using steps 1 through 5 above, but the number (00000) will be already on the field as a default.
Is this for real?

Happy Birthday, Ewan.

Cheap Roadster I got an email from American Express about a new service they've started, My WhisList. It features a different item every day, at a special member price. Blah… blah… One interesting item, though, is the BMW Z4 3.0i Roadster for $5k, which normally lists around $42.5k. Of course, the quantity is seriously limited, and you have to buy it on a certain day at a certain time. Yaddi… Yadda… Still, pretty nifty.

Linkblog Stats I've created a little page displaying the current stats from my linkblog. Quickly approaching 10K links, not bad for 9 months or so.

Confluenced If forgot to blog about it, but I'm now running Confluence to power my Wiki. The folks at Atlassian were nice enough to provide me with an open source license. — Thanks, Mike. Upgrading from SnipSnap was a breeze. There's really nothing to report, it works as advertised. A little resource intensive for my taste, but the functionality and controls more than make up for it.

Bot Tutorial Gustaf has written a short tutorial on using the bots on #mobitopia. It explains the new features I recently mentioned on the Mobibot Wiki. [@624]
Tomcat 5.5 Yesterday afternoon I upgraded Tomcat from 5.0.28 to 5.5.4. Since I was already running Java 5, might as well. The thing I noticed immediately is how much faster (and less resource intensive) the compiling of JSPs is. I guess the Eclipse JDT Java compiler does help. So far, so good.
