Eclipse Mindset

<1 min read

I use IDEA for most of my development, but since I work with many different companies, I often have to use Eclipse too. Every couple months or so, I make a point to start a new personal project in Eclipse, just to keep up to speed.

Today was the day. As I was starting to set things up, I asked Cédric a few questions about shortcuts in Eclipse. As I was lamenting about how I felt so unproductive using Eclipse, he mentioned something I totally agree with. It's all a matter of mindsets.

The more I work with IDEA, the more I find Eclipse's ways counter-intuitive. For example, I was asking about a shortcut to create a class. Cédric mentioned starting with ctrl-n, which is really nifty. Except that when I first looked for it, I could not find it. Why? Because it is labeled as "Other…" under the File->New menu options.

My IDEA-mindset automatically assumed that "Other" meant everything but what was listed above.

The morale of the story. I need to spend more time with Eclipse on a regular basis.

More MacIntel...

Tom is calling foul on Apple's use of benchmarks for the new Intel Macs.

Cédric is talking about mass hypnosis which I totally agree with. Steve has been rehashing the same keynote for years. It is so boring, yet people can't seem to get enough of it. Besides, we all know what's really behind a Steve Jobs keynote.

Al is reporting that Apple can't get enough Core Duo. Apple having supply problems? You don't say.

Todd is reporting that Microsoft will no longer support WMP on Mac OS X.

Geert thinks Acer trumps Apple.

Paul has updated his MacBook Pro vs. PowerBook G4 comparison.

At last, but not least, everybody hates 'MacBook Pro'.

MacIntel

A lot of information flying around relating to yesterday's MacIntel announcements. A lot of questions too.

Michael asks whether the MacBook Pro is the ideal Java machine. Rick found a small Q&A for Java on MacIntel. Tristan is offering some interesting comprisons charts. Neil is lamenting on the lack of software. Ted was disappointed with the Stevenote. Sam is getting a trade-in iMac for his DTK. Mark wonders if the Apple laptops are a good deal. Carlo thinks Apple is missing the boat.

At least we now know they are not preventing us from running Windows. It won't be long before someone figures out a way to make Windows run natively inside Mac OS X. Microsoft already stated that VirtualPC will not run on Rosetta.

Battery life has been surgically removed from all docs, etc. How bad is it? Come on Steve, we can take it.

I also wonder how hot the MacBook Pro really gets? Is that why the internal modem was nixed? Room for an additional fan?

Looks like XP won't run on the MacBook Pro after all.

MacBook Pro

To no big surprise Steve announced the new MacBook Pro.

Looking at the tech specs I noticed a few interesting tidbits:

  • Gone is the FireWire 800 port. I guess it wasn't such a big deal in the first place, Steve, was it?
  • iWork is not free with new machines, a trial version is included. Was this part of the deal with Microsoft to ensure they'll commit to releasing new Mac versions of Office over the next 5 years?
  • The internal modem is gone. An optional external USB modem is available.
  • The s-video port is gone too.
I'm sure more details will be out soon.

Steve's Keynote

Expectation is high for Steve's keynote at Macworld. I suspect Steve's announcements are going to be less than exceptional. The fact that Apple is not providing a live stream of the keynote is a good indication that they are not expecting much.
