blog Dominic — My first Struts book.

[@775]

meYesterday, Dominic asked if I edit my posts by hand. Greg's response got me thinking about ways to streamline the process even further.

Since NewzCrawler implements the Blogger, MetaWeblog and MovableType APIs. I figured I might be able to post directly to my blog, and thus forgo my trusted text editor.

I first looked for the MetaWeblog API, but stop investigating once I discovered that Whiner was behind it. I looked at the Blogger API next, which appeared to be just what I was looking for.

I grabbed a copy of Apache's XML-RPC to handle the remote procedure calls thru a Servlet. And used the jTalk SqlQueryBean and Utility classes to handle all of the database work.

Less than 15 minutes later, I had successfully made my first blog entry via the NewzCrawler Blog Client. Here's a picture of the steps I took to bookmark from NewzCrawler directly to my scratchpad.

meThis morning we received the following letter from my wife's cousin, Bob.

Hi Everyone: I have a “very small favor” to ask of you all.

I have friends from Pakistan who are camping their way around the world. In light of the recent situation, they are concerned and have asked me if I know where they might be able to go without spending a large amount of money. I told them that I would ask friends and family if the have any accommodations. They travel light and bring all their own camping gear, and only require a small place to sleep.

I have given them all of your names and addresses in anticipation that you wont mind. I have attached a picture to help with identification if they turn up. They may bring the green Mercedes or the white one, sometimes they use both.

Bob

me I installed BBEdit 7 on one of my Macs earlier today. I really wanted to play with the new CVS integration.

First thing I noticed, no CVS configuration options or preferences, and of course, it failed miserably. No online help either.

It kept on saying that the connection to my host failed. I assumed it had something to do with SSH. I found the answers I was looking for in the online FAQ. Turns out that you need to setup a global CVS_RSH environment variable using the instruction provided in an OS X Technical Note. Kinda nifty. Don't forget to logout/login for the changes to actually take effect.

The CVS menu provides the basic functionality, and seems to work fairly well. The lack of customization is disappointing, to say the least. Overall it is not too bad for a first implementation, but there's a long way to go to make it really viable.

Apart from the CVS stuff, there's really nothing much new in version 7. Hardly seems worth the upgrade price.
