LG CU500 Mini Review
<1 min read
Last Saturday I picked up a new LG CU500 from the Issaquah Cingular store. I stopped by the Everett store on Friday, but they hadn't received any yet. I called the Issaquah store on Saturday morning and was told they had loads of them.
$250 and a sim transfer later, I had my new phone. Apparently I was the first person to buy one from that store.

The feel and heft and construction of the phone are top notch.
It was nice to see that the GB chip worked.
I do want my voice dialing and external botton controls back.
Both of my previous (and cheapo) LGs supported it, alas.
Have you heard anything about when we will see a sync kit for the CU500?
Or even just a USB cable?
Bluetooth is not the best for mass transfers.
I am also looking for a J2ME app that can support bookmarking for large audio files.
Ever seen the like?

this past Thursday.
Other than the problem with the Smart Card, the phone is just fine.
Beware, if you lock your Smart Card you will not be able to unlock.
As it turns out, (at least for my phone and one other that I tested at the store) the phone will not recognize a change Pin number assisgned to the Smart Card.
If you change the Smart Card PIN with one of your own and set the phone up to request PIN when turned on, the phone will not recognize your PIN. The only solution is to replace the Smart Card.
I went through 4 Smart Cards in the Store using my phone and one other new out of the box phone.
Other than the lack of voice recognition, I love the phone and its many features.
One thing, I question the advertised battery life. On a full charge the phone lasted about 40 hrs., after a few short phone calls and brief fiddling with the multi media functions.
Today, since about 8am I have made a few short phone calls totallng about 15 minutes and am down to 3 bars.

I have the USB cable but the phone doesn't seem to be recognized.
I set the USB Connection mode to Mass Storage.
I was able to copy a picture to my installed microSD card from the phone memory and create a new folder on the card so the card seems to be working fine.
My PC does not have bluetooth built-in.

How is the fringe service on this phone? Say, in city canyons or underground, or in buildings? I am always having a problem with that, esp. the Motorola.
Is it possible to transfer files (mp3's, contact lists) via the SD card and sneakerNet? Can you set up your own mp3's as ringtones?
Erik C. Thauvin
Aug 1, 2006
I haven't noticed any problems making voice calls, but then again, I am in a very well served area. 3G from Cingular has had outages at times though.
You can transfer mp3s and contacts (as vCard/vcf) using the SD card. That's how I did at first. You can setup mp3's as ringtones too, although I've heard they need to be short (small in size). I wouldn't know for sure as I always use clips of mp3s instead of full songs for my ringtones.
Hope this helps,
E.

I live in the Washington DC area where you would think there would be no problem with reception, even in the outter reaches.
But not true, I have had reception problems in the outter areas.
As far as reception in other areas, I am in a building basement @ work and service is spotty at best (for some reason, Verizon users can get some service). Although I don't expect good service in the basement, I do expect great service in and around the city.
I attribute a lot of this to the lack of a mature 3g system.
As I just switched from the TDM, in time this should be just as good. BTW, see my post of Tue, Jul 25 2006 at 10:33:42 PDT regarding the smartcard.

Good reception, fast internet access etc...
However, the Kingston 1GB microSD card does not seem to be recognized.
When I go into "MyStuff" and then "9.Memory Card" it says 'Card Not Ready'.
Any similar experience with Kingston micro SD cards?
Are there better brands of micro SD cards that are compatible?
What is the largest micro SD memory card?
Any help is apreciated.

Make sure your phone is set to "mass storage" rather than "data service" on the USB
connection mode under Connection under Settings.
When you use a USB cable and WinXP, your phone will connect and install itself as a
generic USB mass storage device.
No software necessary.

The only issue I have is that when I download the MP# files from my laptop to the LG CU500, they show up on the laptop F drive (the LG CU500) but do not show up when I look at "All Songs" from the menu. They are all MP3 files. Does anyone know why that would happen or is this phone picky about certain MP3 files?
Thanks,
Rodney

First off, I got nearly all accessories known to man for this phone.. the bluetooth headset (Jorba?), the bluetooth ear thing.. the bud headphones, the car charger, the home charger, a case, the USB cable, and the 1 GB sandisk memory card. whew!
Well, the salesman gave me the wrong USB cable, which actually worked out good because I realized this laptop (girlfriend's DELL inspiron 6000) has a card reader! so up went the 700MB of MP3s in about 5 min!
The bluetooth headphones sound great! They have volume and track buttons on there.. and was easy to synch.. just hold down the button on the headphone (big round one) until the light turns blue (up to 10 seconds). Took me a bit to figure this out.. forgot the manual at home...
Ok. So, mp3 player is cool, the buttons on the front are nice, but what is it with the sound quality when talking to people? did they forget about this? was it a last minute decision to make it sound like crap?
After the other person is quiet for a second, when they start to talk the volume fades in. Really annoying! Almost makes me want to take it back! This is basically why I bought a new phone, because my old LG 4400(?) sounded like crap!
At least I'm not with US Cellular anymore! heh...
Ok. The menu feature isnt as bad as mentioned above or elsewhere. You have your own menu button where you can assign 12 different 'short-cut' menu items.
The button for text-messaging takes you right to a new text message, which is annoying, but a short-cut menu item in your menu helps.. as well as one for IM, calendar, alarm clock etc..
NO GAMES!??!!? I was disapointed about not getting any games on my last LG! I saw Tetris and POGO, but didn't realize they were demos! :(
The 3G network is super fast! Even though it is limited to 1.8Mbps. Watching MobiTV was somewhat choppy and liked to buffer.. but it had it's good moments.
The free videos that cingular offers are old.. at least some.. The comedy central vid was from 2004! wtf!
A lot more 'tools' on this LG than my last one had... here they are:
Alarm Clock, Calendar, Notepad, Calculator, Tip Calculator, World Clcok, Tasks, Stop Watch, Unit Converter, Date Finder, D-Day Counter (kinda creepy)....
As noted above, large MP3s don't seem to work as ring tones! I'd really like to figure out how to use the full size MP3s... If you have to make em smaller, that's fine, but if THAT doesn't work, then wtf? That's one of the reasons I got this phone... Hmph..
So, bottom line...
Pros:
Decent battery life (get the car charger)
good mp3 player
easy navigation.. once you get used to it
swivel camera... rotates vertically for self pics etc..
low res video (pro?)
looks nice
decent size screen.. colors decent
MobiTV is kinda cool.. definately get the unlimited data.. they at least post several warnings to not bother if you don't!
Cons:
Can't hear other person talking... will try speakerphone! My hearing sucks anyways (walkman, mid-80's.. remember those?)
i left my smokes outside :(
regular sized mp3s cant be used for ring tone (??)
NO GAMES!! :(
yahoo IM keeps bugging out on me after signging in :(
bought too many damn accessories!! mwuahaha
Well... I don't know. The little bluetooth thing for my ear apparently sounds like i'm in a wind tunnel when talking to others... on their end. Works fine for me!
Took me a day to figure out how to use the speaker phone! There's nothing in the index... and I didn't see the message displayed whilst talking...
Ok, i'm done rambling! :)

My phone, like so many others in this thread, recognizes my 1g sandisk micro card, under connections my phone is set to "mass storage", i have a usb data cable and when i connect my phone to the computer and the computer wants to install software i click cancel...i get a notice saying the hardware might not work properly. i ignore this and go to "my computer" and there is no recognition of the phone as an external or removable storage.
does anyone know of a work around for this problem?
and please stop replying that "just make sure the card is in all the way" or "make sure the phone is set to mass storage" because this has all been done and all instructions have been followed to the letter with the same result: THE COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE PHONE. Thanks to anyone that make be able to help solve this problem.

I purchased a 1 GB from NewEgg.

Has anyone had any luck with the 2 GB cards?
Re: MP3 Ringtones.
MP3s work as ringtones, you just have to cut them down.
I'm not sure if it's a file size limit, or a song length limit.
I shortened a song down to about 30 seconds and it works fine as a ringtone.
Re: Sync Software.
You can download synch software from here >
rapidshare.de…
Re: Data Cable.
I picked one up off of eBay, from a seller called TechInvasion.
It also came with a CD with drivers for the phone, lots of ringtones, etc.
Re: Drivers.
You can find these drivers on the web.
Google for LG USB Modem Driver 4.5
Re: Annoying "Always Ask" when you're using Google Maps, gmail, or anything else that accesses the Internet.
You can turn this off by editing a file on the phone called 'permissions'.
See the howardforums thread mentioned above in Erik Thauvin's post.
Re: Movies.
Yes, you can place movies on the phone, as long as they are converted.
There are a number of free utilities out there that will do this.
Things I'd like to resolve.
1. When you close the flip, your apps quit running.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?
2. Remote Desktop capability.
I tried an app that was supposed to be able to do remote desktop from the phone to a pc/server.
It didn't work.
Has anyone had any luck with this?
3. Ringtone volume.
The ringtones start quiet then gradually increase in volume.
Is there a fix for this?

enter in your phone number. I believe you need to be signed up for Cingular Online and have the CU500 set as your current phone. Once you enter in your phone number, accept the terms and conditions and make sure your phone is powered on. You should recieve a message asking if you would like to update. Agree, and the update takes about a minute to download (on 3G, probably longer on EDGE). Then your phone will power cycle and the installation takes about 5 minutes.

so here is the process i followed.
the most important thing is you have to be certain about your cable.... i bought an after-market cable for $10 that supposedly worked with the cu500... it didn't, all it did was let the phone charge off the computer... so i advise everyone to purchase an lg OEM cable, it's worth the $30ish
investment (companies sell you a cable that is nonreturnable- clearly stated in the purchase agreement - so you're stuck with it whether it works or not!
make sure it is an lg manufactured cable!!) next i downloaded and installed the cingular communications manager available here:
cingular.com…
next i downloaded and installed the lg pc sync program (4 separate individual programs in this zip file... install all of them!) this program is available here: au.lgmobile.com…
please note that the phone is called the TU500 (same phone, but from australia where the phone has more features enabled) next step is to set your phone's usb connection to "DATA SERVICE" . next open the cingular communications manager you just installed and click on tools, then click device wizard.
simply follow the instructions and when the wizard is complete close the wizard and then wait to see if your phone is recognized by the program... if it is you are almost there... if it does not, chances are your cable is not the proper one.
next, right click the lg phone sync icon next to your clock and click configurations, when the program opens click the "communication settings" and click the port that has an asterik or the words "available for use" next to it. close the program, right click again and click synchronize... now your phone should sync with the program. after all of this, unplug your phone change the usb setting to "MASS STORAGE" and plug the phone back in. your phone should beep and say "connect as mass storage"... now go to "my computer" and TADA! there before your eyes in the section "DEVICES WITH REMOVABLE STORAGE" should be listed "Removable Disk(x:)"{x being the next availabe letter for your drives}.. I hope this helps everyone that has had the same problem and couldn't find a solution!
good luck and let me know if it worked for you!

1. As per the LG company. They said to use Sandisk memory cards as they are prefered and will cause less problems.
2. Also, battery is a lithium (spelling) type and can be recharged at any time. Does not have to only be charged when low.
3. Activating the bluetooth and using multi-media functions will put more drain on the battery but should not if all your making are short calls.
4. To input ringtones from a pc. You must have a memory card. Max size is 1 GB. The CU500 will not accomodate any larger memory cards. Minimum I saw was 256 Megs. The problem I had was that after installing the 1GB memory card I went to check memory (option 0) and it said card not found. The card came with an attachment so it could be put into a card reader. I did this to see if the PC picked it up. It did not. I determined that the card was bad. I returned to the store, picked up a new, had it tested in the store. Now when I checked for a memory card, it picked it up. I purchased a phone to pc hookup via USB. My computer picked it up immediately. As per the LG company, no software is needed so if you come to that found new hardware and it asks to locate drivers etc, they said just cancel it. It worked fine once I got a new memory card. Now on the card while it was in my card reader, I put in a couple of folders labled Ringstones and Photos. I can now put in files two ways. Direct to the phone via the USB connection or I can put the memory card into the card reader (memory card comes with a memory card adapter) of the PC and put in my ringtones or whatever and put the card back into my phone already loaded.
Hope this helps

I am not able to make my Sandisk 1G card to work with the phone.
The 512mb that I have works fine.
I had previously purchased a PNY 1G
I had a message on the phone that read "card not ready" Now I have the Sandisk 1g and I get the same message.
I called Sandisk and they told me to reformat it on the PC, I then called LG and they told me it might be a faulty card and to try it on a different phone to see if it works. They offered to replace my phone for free if that was the problem.
I called Cingular for an update and waited on hold with one of their agents for about twenty minutes.
They tried to send me a software update but were unsuccessful.
They told me they would send it to my phone as soon as they got the word from there technical staff.
Has anyone had this problem with the 1G Sandisk card not working?

i had to format it on the computer to make it work adn even then it will like mess up sometimes.
The thing is, the old sandisk 1gb cards dont work, they had a new 1 come out bout 2 weeks ago that does work.
its only the 1gb old cards that wont work, any other size of any company works.
thats why the 1gb didnt work and thats why the 512 did.

Much much better than the voice dial on the device as this doesn't have to be trained.

open the phone and type in 277634#*#
Select #4 "port settings"
then select #4 "mass storage"
Then press the red phone button.
Connect the phone to your computer. You will be prompted to install drivers. Even in XP, you have to install the drivers -- it won't work without them. Tell the wizard to automatically find the drivers; even without the CD, it will find the drivers.
Then, if you have a card installed in the phone, it will come up as a mass storage drive. You can drag and drop from there.
Note: you have to have a microSD card installed to transfer files via USB.

Here's how it worked in my case:
- Installed the Australian software
- Connected the USB cable to the phone (turned on)
- PC immediately recognized the microSD card as a disk drive
- When I "exited" from that connection (a screen pops up on the phone to let you do this), I started the Aussie LG synch program. This established the com port connection to the phone's internal memory and the smart card (not the microSD card).
- Used the phone manager and desktop software to synch info with my PC
Note: The only little "gotcha" in all this was that I first tried to use the synch software while the PC was viewing the microSD card as a disk drive. But you can't use the USB cable for two things at once; it's one or the other. So you have to "exit" the disk drive connection (via the phone) before you start the synch software, which works with the phone memory (not with the microSD card).
Hope that's clear. Again, thanks to everyone for the good suggestions.

I also purchased a ScanDisk microSD/Transflash Adapter.
I used my ScanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 Reader/Writer to download mp3 files to the card and then installed the card into the phone.
I didn't have any problems with getting the phone to recognize the card.
The problem I am having is getting the player to play the entire mp3 files that are not recorded for ringtones.
It starts out beautiful and stops part way into the song.
The carrier is clueless as to how to fix it.
There was anoter customer in the store today that was having the same problem.
Does anyone know a fix for this issue?
Any suggestions offered are appreciated.

I've had this phone for months now and couldn't get it to synch to the computer. After reading your suggestions, re. aussie site, downloading manager, etc., it FINALLY worked! I was having the same issues as others.....computer recognizing it as USB modem, etc.
THANKS!

First attach the USB SecureMate and wait until the green light glows steadily. Then put the 1 GB
microSD card into the SanDisk microSD adapter and insert the adapter (which holds the microSD card) into the SecureMate. A disk image of the "NO NAME" microSD is automatically mounted onto the Mac desktop. Open "NO NAME" and create a directory called "Music" at the root level. Drag mp3 and/or aac audio files into "Music".
Interestingly, when I put the microSD back into the CU500, only mp3 files are automatically found by the Music Player. I have to navigate to "My Stuff" and select "Memory Card" and then "Music" to get to the aac files I had ripped from a CD. I am able to play the aac files out of the "My Stuff" directory, but thus far have been unable to have them show up in the Music Player list.

Am I completely out of luck with getting my Mac to see this? If I get a SanDisk card (and a card reader) and format it to Mac will it work with the phone? I admit I only did a scan though all of the posts, so I may have missed something, but I'm hoping someone knows a way around this problem.

I got the phone to recognize the card, but I can't seem to save pics on the memory card or move existing pics from the phone to the memory card.
any ideas other
than buying a 1G memory card?

The phone is on but i can't call anyone and if anyone calls me it goes straight to voice mail.
However, if they leave a voice mail i never get it.
The only way to fix it is to take out the battery.
I also just got a new battery 5 days ago.
has anyone else had this problem?
