Fred Meyer: 400,000,000 Fewer Plastic Bags

<1 min read

Just got an email from Fred Meyer about using their Reusable Shopping Bags:

Fred Meyer is working with our sister divisions in the Kroger company and our suppliers to reduce excess packaging. For bags, our goal is reducing plastic bag usage by 400,000,000 in 2008. Encouraging Customers like you to use these Reusable Shopping Bags is a good start.

I looked at them a while back. They felt pretty flimsy to me. I'll have too see if they are any better now.

A penny discount for using reusable bags would be nice too.

They do offer a discount...

Dear Mr. Thauvin:

Thank you for your e-mail.

We do offer a 5-cent refund every time you
bring in your own bag. That is on any type of bag - even if you want us to
put your groceries in your gym bag - but it does not apply to plastic. We
instead ask that our Customers recycle their plastic bags at the bins
provided at the grocery entrance to our store.

If you are bringing your own bags and are unable to get the 5-cent refund,
please talk to the store director, or please let me know and I will make
sure you get it.

Best regards,

Melinda Merrill
