LG CU500 Mini Review

Last Saturday I picked up a new LG CU500 from the Issaquah Cingular store. I stopped by the Everett store on Friday, but they hadn't received any yet. I called the Issaquah store on Saturday morning and was told they had loads of them.

$250 and a sim transfer later, I had my new phone. Apparently I was the first person to buy one from that store.

Hi,

I like your review a lot thanks for all of the info.
I am going to pick this phone up today. I am looking forward to it.
Its your review of the phone that made me want to get it. Looks like a soild phone.
Thanks.

robJul 24, 2006 at 12:32

Thanks for the review. I bought one of these, and I like it, but the camera really takes bad pictures, nothing close to the quality of the ones you posted. Videos look bad as well...any ideas? If the camera is this bad, I may just take it back and wait for the samsung zx20 (I have the zx10).

I got my CU500 on Friday(7/20) and I really like it.  The feel and heft and construction of the phone are top notch.  It was nice to see that the GB chip worked.  I do want my voice dialing and external botton controls back.  Both of my previous (and cheapo) LGs supported it, alas.

Have you heard anything about when we will see a sync kit for the CU500?  Or even just a USB cable?  Bluetooth is not the best for mass transfers.

I am also looking for a J2ME app that can support bookmarking for large audio files.  Ever seen the like?

MikeJul 25, 2006 at 10:33

just bought the CU500  this past Thursday.  Other than the problem with the Smart Card, the phone is just fine.  Beware, if you lock your Smart Card you will not be able to unlock.  As it turns out, (at least for my phone and one other that I tested at the store) the phone will not recognize a change Pin number assisgned to the Smart Card.  If you change the Smart Card PIN with one of your own and set the phone up to request PIN when turned on, the phone will not recognize your PIN. The only solution is to replace the Smart Card.  I went through 4 Smart Cards in the Store using my phone and one other new out of the box phone.

Other than the lack of voice recognition, I love the phone and its many features.  One thing, I question the advertised battery life. On a full charge the phone lasted about 40 hrs., after a few short phone calls and brief fiddling with the multi media functions.  Today, since about 8am I have made a few short phone calls totallng about 15 minutes and am down to 3 bars.

Has anyone been able to use a USB cable to transfer mp3 files from a PC or synchronize a contact list or anything?  I have the USB cable but the phone doesn't seem to be recognized.  I set the USB Connection mode to Mass Storage.  I was able to copy a picture to my installed microSD card from the phone memory and create a new folder on the card so the card seems to be working fine.  My PC does not have bluetooth built-in.

Erik C. ThauvinJul 28, 2006 at 14:45

I just got my USB cable. Seems to work like a charm. No problems mounting the micoSD card as a USB Mass Storage device.

I was even able to install the LG Modem Driver from a Verizon VCAST Music Essential Kit for the LG VX8100, 8300 or 9800M. I haven't actually tried using the modem though.

Erik C. ThauvinJul 29, 2006 at 10:18

I had no problems using the LG Modem Driver over USB (and Bluetooth). You just have to make sure that the phone is setup for USB or Bluetooth under Settings --> Connection -> Dial Up Networking.

I used the following DUN settings on my computer:

    Phone Number: *99#
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: CINGULAR1

Hope this helps,

E.

Just picked one of these up. Phone works great, good music quality and no problem syncing with my usb blue tooth adapter for my PC. There is a setting in the camera mode that allows you to reverse the image on the camera for taking self photos. The no external ring volume control is a drag but the asterix does work as a hot key for setting vibrate mode on.

another JeffAug 1, 2006 at 08:21

I'm considering this phone to replace a Motorola 220 that was *ahem* run over by a car.

How is the fringe service on this phone? Say, in city canyons or underground, or in buildings? I am always having a problem with that, esp. the Motorola.

Is it possible to transfer files (mp3's, contact lists) via the SD card and sneakerNet? Can you set up your own mp3's as ringtones?

Erik C. ThauvinAug 1, 2006 at 19:20

another Jeff:

I haven't noticed any problems making voice calls, but then again, I am in a very well served area. 3G from Cingular has had outages at times though.

You can transfer mp3s and contacts (as vCard/vcf) using the SD card. That's how I did at first. You can setup mp3's as ringtones too, although I've heard they need to be short (small in size). I wouldn't know for sure as I always use clips of mp3s instead of full songs for my ringtones.

Hope this helps,

E.

Another Jeff,

I live in the Washington DC area where you would think there would be no problem with reception, even in the outter reaches.  But not true, I have had reception problems in the outter areas.  As far as reception in other areas, I am in a building basement @ work and service is spotty at best (for some reason, Verizon users can get some service). Although I don't expect good service in the basement, I do expect great service in and around the city.  I attribute a lot of this to the lack of a mature 3g system.  As I just switched from the TDM, in time this should be just as good. BTW, see my post of Tue, Jul 25 2006 at 10:33:42 PDT regarding the smartcard.  Very important information

Wow I hate you. I'm Jealous. I work for cingular and we got the display demo (dummy phone) about two or three weeks ago and after looking it up i've been excited about it since... but we can't order them yet. And the other stores (even corporate) don't have them... I want this phone OH SO BADLY!

EroAug 5, 2006 at 13:27

I've had this phone for a bit now and I've really grown to appreciate its features. However does anyone know where I can get the drivers for it to sync up with my PC? B/c my computer wont recognize it on the data cable.

RexAug 8, 2006 at 02:06

i had just bought my phone...and i was wondering how to set up the bluetooth?...n e wayz  did u buy the package wid vcast from verizon wid the cd, usb, and the headfones?...

RexAug 13, 2006 at 11:19

yeh ive tried everything to put music on my phone but it doesnt show up when i connect it to the computer...i put it on mass storage and everything...i installed the program...i duno maybe i need a new usb cable?...
any suggestions?

MoAug 24, 2006 at 14:50

Looks like the best way to connect via bluetooth to transfer files from PC to cu500 is to install the drivers that came with your bluetooth adapter.   Seems theres issues with WinXP's built in drivers for the ODBEX file exchange.

This is what I had to do and now I'm able to transfer files to the phone's main memory or mem card.

helixSep 12, 2006 at 11:49

I got a new LG CU500 from cingular, It's great but I having problems to use my music how ringtone. First the phone said "File to large" them I reduced the size but now the phone is telling me "non-acceptable content". It's MP3 and the size its the same like the ringtones from my phone. What I suppose to do to use my music how ringtone??

Help please.

Thanks

I recently purchased this phone and I've really enjoyed it so far.  How difficult was it to set up flickr uploading?

ChadSep 28, 2006 at 16:18

I cannot seem to upload music via the USB cable.  I've read instructions that say you just cancel when it tries to search for the drivers, but I do that twice and go into My Computer and it does not show under "Devices with External memory". I have my USB settings set to mass storage and have a 512 MB Sandisk memory card inserted. I am running Windows XP. Any ideas?

AcazarOct 5, 2006 at 21:09

The phone seems to work well.  Good reception, fast internet access etc...

However, the Kingston 1GB microSD card does not seem to be recognized.  When I go into "MyStuff" and then "9.Memory Card" it says 'Card Not Ready'.

Any similar experience with Kingston micro SD cards?
Are there better brands of micro SD cards that are compatible?
What is the largest micro SD memory card?

Any help is apreciated.

pantherOct 7, 2006 at 15:58

i like everything about this phone but I can't live w/o voice dialing feature. What's the point of using bluetooth headset if you can't dial from it. Can a J2ME app provide this functionality?

Acazar,

I am using sandisk 1gb card wroks great.

boOct 13, 2006 at 13:59

I can not upload any files either,  first i used a toshiba 1g mini sd that didnt even show up in my phone, i then bought a sandisk 512mb and it shows up but my computer still will not recognize it. after i cancel the install wizard, a pop up tells me that that my hardware may not function properly, and yes my phone is set to mass media and the card is recognized.  Seems to be a lot of us with this problem... what is the solution.

thanks, peace.

Steve- Dawn-ThomasOct 13, 2006 at 14:59

You have to have the sd card in the phone for the usb cable to work. NO EXCEPTIONS!! there is not a need for the driver software to be on a disc.  after the sd card is installed the phn sycs fine!!!!!

LG cu500 data cable problems

Make sure your phone is set to "mass storage" rather than "data service" on the USB
connection mode under Connection under Settings.
When you use a USB cable and WinXP, your phone will connect and install itself as a
generic USB mass storage device.  No software necessary.

RodneyNov 1, 2006 at 21:34

I really like this phone.  The only issue I have is that when I download the MP# files from my laptop to the LG CU500, they show up on the laptop F drive (the LG CU500) but do not show up when I look at "All Songs" from the menu. They are all MP3 files. Does anyone know why that would happen or is this phone picky about certain MP3 files?

Thanks,
Rodney

shawnNov 2, 2006 at 21:53

I just got this phone yesterday... and am somewhat pleased.

First off, I got nearly all accessories known to man for this phone.. the bluetooth headset (Jorba?), the bluetooth ear thing.. the bud headphones, the car charger, the home charger, a case, the USB cable, and the 1 GB sandisk memory card. whew!

Well, the salesman gave me the wrong USB cable, which actually worked out good because I realized this laptop (girlfriend's DELL inspiron 6000) has a card reader! so up went the 700MB of MP3s in about 5 min!

The bluetooth headphones sound great! They have volume and track buttons on there.. and was easy to synch.. just hold down the button on the headphone (big round one) until the light turns blue (up to 10 seconds). Took me a bit to figure this out.. forgot the manual at home...

Ok. So, mp3 player is cool, the buttons on the front are nice, but what is it with the sound quality when talking to people? did they forget about this? was it a last minute decision to make it sound like crap?

After the other person is quiet for a second, when they start to talk the volume fades in. Really annoying! Almost makes me want to take it back! This is basically why I bought a new phone, because my old LG 4400(?) sounded like crap!

At least I'm not with US Cellular anymore! heh...

Ok. The menu feature isnt as bad as mentioned above or elsewhere. You have your own menu button where you can assign 12 different 'short-cut' menu items.

The button for text-messaging takes you right to a new text message, which is annoying, but a short-cut menu item in your menu helps.. as well as one for IM, calendar, alarm clock etc..

NO GAMES!??!!? I was disapointed about not getting any games on my last LG! I saw Tetris and POGO, but didn't realize they were demos! :(

The 3G network is super fast! Even though it is limited to 1.8Mbps. Watching MobiTV was somewhat choppy and liked to buffer.. but it had it's good moments.

The free videos that cingular offers are old.. at least some.. The comedy central vid was from 2004! wtf!

A lot more 'tools' on this LG than my last one had... here they are:
Alarm Clock, Calendar, Notepad, Calculator, Tip Calculator, World Clcok, Tasks, Stop Watch, Unit Converter, Date Finder, D-Day Counter (kinda creepy)....

As noted above, large MP3s don't seem to work as ring tones! I'd really like to figure out how to use the full size MP3s... If you have to make em smaller, that's fine, but if THAT doesn't work, then wtf? That's one of the reasons I got this phone... Hmph..

So, bottom line...

Pros:
Decent battery life (get the car charger)
good mp3 player
easy navigation.. once you get used to it
swivel camera... rotates vertically for self pics etc..
low res video (pro?)
looks nice
decent size screen.. colors decent
MobiTV is kinda cool.. definately get the unlimited data.. they at least post several warnings to not bother if you don't!

Cons:
Can't hear other person talking... will try speakerphone! My hearing sucks anyways (walkman, mid-80's.. remember those?)
i left my smokes outside :(
regular sized mp3s cant be used for ring tone (??)
NO GAMES!! :(
yahoo IM keeps bugging out on me after signging in :(
bought too many damn accessories!! mwuahaha

Well... I don't know. The little bluetooth thing for my ear apparently sounds like i'm in a wind tunnel when talking to others... on their end. Works fine for me!

Took me a day to figure out how to use the speaker phone! There's nothing in the index... and I didn't see the message displayed whilst talking...

Ok, i'm done rambling! :)

I keep seeing others with my problem and keep seeing responses from people that just don't seem to get it.  My phone, like so many others in this thread, recognizes my 1g sandisk micro card, under connections my phone is set to "mass storage", i have a usb data cable and when i connect my phone to the computer and the computer wants to install software i click cancel...i get a notice saying the hardware might not work properly. i ignore this and go to "my computer" and there is no recognition of the phone as an external or removable storage.  does anyone know of a work around for this problem?  and please stop replying that "just make sure the card is in all the way" or "make sure the phone is set to mass storage" because this has all been done and all instructions have been followed to the letter with the same result: THE COMPUTER DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE PHONE. Thanks to anyone that make be able to help solve this problem.

RodneyNov 4, 2006 at 01:11

I figured out why all the MP3s weren't showing up.  The song titles were too long.  The songs were on the chip but not displayed on the phone.  Once I shortend them (some showed the movie title and everyone on the song) the songs showed up and played.

Thanks to anyone who was/is troubleshooting this.

AaronNov 4, 2006 at 23:24

I just talked directly with LG yesterday.  I told them I just bought a new card but it didn't seem to be recognized.  And, before I could go any further she asked, "is it a Kingston?".  She stated that the ONLY brand that works with it is SanDisk.

EdNov 8, 2006 at 13:42

OK, U guys have got me convinced. With the cu500 I need 2 get the $20 Media plan & I will B able 2 use it as a modem w/my Toshiba Satellite via bluetooth. After which I'll have unlimited inet access. Do I need 2 D/l a modem driver frm somewhere? Do I need anything else?

U GUYS R GREAT!!  Thanx, Ed...

Guess what? If anybody's contract with cingular is ending soon...you can get that phone from my business for free, the only requirement is that you sign up for a 2 year contract with cingular. It's awesome. If interested I can give you a client ID number for my website, just call 1(866)345-2109 and leave a message with some contact info so i can get back in touch with you.

ChadNov 14, 2006 at 09:55

I just got this phone yesterday, and it did not come with the chip that allows for music or mp3's. they didnt have the chip at the cingular store where i got the phone, but he told me i can get it at circuit city. but i cant find it anywhere. where can i go to get the chip so that i can play music from it, and does anyone happen to know how much that would cost? if anyone can help, i would really appreciate it, thanks.

Re: MicroSD Cards.  I purchased a 1 GB from NewEgg.  http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820171126.  They have excellent prices.  There is a 2 GB MicroSD, but I wasn't sure if it would work in the CU500.  Has anyone had any luck with the 2 GB cards?

Re: MP3 Ringtones.  MP3s work as ringtones, you just have to cut them down.  I'm not sure if it's a file size limit, or a song length limit.  I shortened a song down to about 30 seconds and it works fine as a ringtone.

Re: Sync Software.  You can download synch software from here > http://rapidshare.de/files/30648673/shared.zip.html

Re: Data Cable.  I picked one up off of eBay, from a seller called TechInvasion.  It also came with a CD with drivers for the phone, lots of ringtones, etc.

Re: Drivers.  You can find these drivers on the web.  Google for LG USB Modem Driver 4.5

Re: Annoying "Always Ask" when you're using Google Maps, gmail, or anything else that accesses the Internet.  You can turn this off by editing a file on the phone called 'permissions'.  See the howardforums thread mentioned above in Erik Thauvin's post.

Re: Movies.  Yes, you can place movies on the phone, as long as they are converted.  There are a number of free utilities out there that will do this.

Things I'd like to resolve.
1. When you close the flip, your apps quit running.  Does anyone know of a fix for this?
2. Remote Desktop capability.  I tried an app that was supposed to be able to do remote desktop from the phone to a pc/server.  It didn't work.  Has anyone had any luck with this?
3. Ringtone volume.  The ringtones start quiet then gradually increase in volume.  Is there a fix for this?

aaNov 19, 2006 at 10:41

re LGCU500 micro sd, 1GB is max based on LG support. The kingston 1gb that i bought is not compatible also, Sandisk is suppose to work but I read one girl had a problem with the 1gb sandisk, I may just go with the 512 mb sold at cingular to be sure.

RandallNov 26, 2006 at 21:28

The key words are Scan Disk...If you have knigston or a PNY tech. memory card it will not work with the LG CU500 model due to a software issue/a possible aliance with cingular and scan disk, but never the less it is a Cingular software issue and i was informed that they are working on an update...a time frame was not specified to me. The advice that the experts at cingular gave me was amazingly helpfull, buy a new card...Thanks Cingular! Seriously, buying a new 1GB Scan Disk, which are generally more expensive, is not a great option. I guess check the Cingular website for further software updates. The phone has a manual update feature so you can check for updates, but this option is not the best, the only way to make sure your phone is properly updated you must turn your phone OFF and keep it off for 10 to 15 mins every week. so ill be pressing my off button very frequently in the next couple of weeks praying for an update...good luck and enjoy the great phone

RandallNov 26, 2006 at 21:36

link to check for software updates:
http://forums.mobiledia.com/cgi-bin/redirect.cgi?http://selfcare.mycingular.net:8082/scgui

enter in your phone number. I believe you need to be signed up for Cingular Online and have the CU500 set as your current phone. Once you enter in your phone number, accept the terms and conditions and make sure your phone is powered on. You should recieve a message asking if you would like to update. Agree, and the update takes about a minute to download (on 3G, probably longer on EDGE). Then your phone will power cycle and the installation takes about 5 minutes.

AdamNov 28, 2006 at 19:49

A lot of people have stated that they love this phone with a couple of major drawbacks - the lack of software from LG and the annoying fact that you cannot disable the confirmation tones without silencing the phone completely.  I address both in this little guide - as always, read the disclaimer.....

Hope you find it useful

I have the same question as Steve up there, and plz someone give me a good answer. I cant get my computer to recognize the phone when i put it in on the USB cable. I go to My computer but nothing comes up under it. PLZ HELP!!!!!

SteveDec 1, 2006 at 00:26

ok...i finally got my computer to recognize my phone!  so here is the process i followed.  the most important thing is you have to be certain about your cable....i bought an after-market cable for $10 that supposedly worked with the cu500...it didn't, all it did was let the phone charge off the computer...so i advise everyone to purchase an lg OEM cable, it's worth the $30ish  investment (companies sell you a cable that is nonreturnable- clearly stated in the purchase agreement - so you're stuck with it whether it works or not!  make sure it is an lg manufactured cable!!) next i downloaded and installed the cingular communications manager available here:  http://www.cingular.com/midtolarge/communicationmgr  next i downloaded and installed the lg pc sync program (4 separate individual programs in this zip file...install all of them!) this program is available here: http://au.lgmobile.com/webwar/jsp/phones/mnswList.jsp  please note that the phone is called the TU500 (same phone, but from australia where the phone has more features enabled) next step is to set your phone's usb connection to "DATA SERVICE" . next open the cingular communications manager you just installed and click on tools, then click device wizard.  simply follow the instructions and when the wizard is complete close the wizard and then wait to see if your phone is recognized by the program...if it is you are almost there...if it does not, chances are your cable is not the proper one.  next, right click the lg phone sync icon next to your clock and click configurations, when the program opens click the "communication settings" and click the port that has an asterik or the words "available for use" next to it. close the program, right click again and click synchronize...now your phone should sync with the program. after all of this, unplug your phone change the usb setting to "MASS STORAGE" and plug the phone back in. your phone should beep and say "connect as mass storage"...now go to "my computer" and TADA! there before your eyes in the section "DEVICES WITH REMOVABLE STORAGE" should be listed "Removable Disk(x:)"{x being the next availabe letter for your drives}.. I hope this helps everyone that has had the same problem and couldn't find a solution!  good luck and let me know if it worked for you!

SteveDec 1, 2006 at 01:04

one more bit of info to add...once you get your computer to recognize your phone as a removable disk you can download this free program that will let you trim mp3's down to a size that you can then use as a ringtone.  most people probably know this or have a similar program, but for those of you who are just like me...not a computer whiz...you can get this program here:   http://www.mptrim.com/  good luck all.

BlainDec 2, 2006 at 16:10

Did everything as listed exactly above, got all the way to the synch, worked fine, imported contacts and such. unplug, turn my phone to data storage, plug back in and nothing comes up under "my computer" nor was their any message or beep from the phone. Only thing that shows up under my computer is a new folder (which is now always there) called LG Phone. Still searching to make that removable storage icon appear....

Appreciate the instructions though, worked perfectly for everything else. Any more ideas lemme know.

SteveDec 3, 2006 at 22:18

blain  once you get your phone synched you must unplug and turn the usb connection back to "mass storage" then it should appear as removable device

RockyDec 5, 2006 at 12:56

Hey, If u guys are having trouble after u install all the sowftware because the comp wont recoginze it as a removable disc then turn off ur phone take off ur battery and then take out the card i actually didtn take it all the way out i just pushed it in so it popped out a little to where u have to push it back in to lock it in. Then hook it up again and from my i experince i herd a dig and i sa the words MASS STORAGE!!!

Hope it helped,
                     have a good one!

BillDec 11, 2006 at 16:28

I just purchased the LG CU500 and I love it. I would have loved it more with voice activation. Be that as it may. Here are some tips that I had learned the hardway.

1. As per the LG company. They said to use Sandisk memory cards as they are prefered and will cause less problems.

2. Also, battery is a lithium (spelling) type and can be recharged at any time. Does not have to only be charged when low.

3. Activating the bluetooth and using multi-media functions will put more drain on the battery but should not if all your making are short calls.

4. To input ringtones from a pc. You must have a memory card. Max size is 1 GB. The CU500 will not accomodate any larger memory cards. Minimum I saw was 256 Megs. The problem I had was that after installing the 1GB memory card I went to check memory (option 0) and it said card not found. The card came with an attachment so it could be put into a card reader. I did this to see if the PC picked it up. It did not. I determined that the card was bad. I returned to the store, picked up a new, had it tested in the store. Now when I checked for a memory card, it picked it up. I purchased a phone to pc hookup via USB. My computer picked it up immediately. As per the LG company, no software is needed so if you come to that found new hardware and it asks to locate drivers etc, they said just cancel it. It worked fine once I got a new memory card. Now on the card while it was in my card reader, I put in a couple of folders labled Ringstones and Photos. I can now put in files two ways. Direct to the phone via the USB connection or I can put the memory card into the card reader (memory card comes with a memory card adapter) of the PC and put in my ringtones or whatever and put the card back into my phone already loaded.

Hope this helps

I have an LG CU500 and am thrilled with it. However, am I to understand that you are charged for data transfer when you upload from your phone or download music to your phone??

TimDec 28, 2006 at 03:35

We just got my daughter the LG CU500 and down (up?) loaded mp4 iTunes songs to her phone.  The songs show up in her "Other Files" folder and she can play them on her phone, but they do not show up in her "My Music" folder and she cannot use the installed Cingular music player to play them (with the phone closed).  Any thoughts as to how to get the Cingular music player to recognize the songs?  I've tried transfering the songs from her "Music" folder to the "Audio" folder that shows up when the phone is connected to the PC, but they still aren't recognized by the music player.

Any help is appreciated!

I have a lgcu500.  I am not able to make my Sandisk 1G card to work with the phone.  The 512mb that I have works fine.  I had previously purchased a PNY 1G  I had a message on the phone that read "card not ready" Now I have the Sandisk 1g and I get the same message.  I called Sandisk and they told me to reformat it on the PC, I then called LG and they told me it might be a faulty card and to try it on a different phone to see if it works. They offered to replace my phone for free if that was the problem.  I called Cingular for an update and waited on hold with one of their agents for about twenty minutes.  They tried to send me a software update but were unsuccessful.  They told me they would send it to my phone as soon as they got the word from there technical staff.  Has anyone had this problem with the 1G Sandisk card not working?

dude i got the 1gb mem card for christmas. its not sandisk or pny, but kingston. the card works in all the phones very good cept the lg cu500 that i got.  i had to format it on the computer to make it work adn even then it will like mess up sometimes.  The thing is, the old sandisk 1gb cards dont work, they had a new 1 come out bout 2 weeks ago that does work.  its only the 1gb old cards that wont work, any other size of any company works.  thats why the 1gb didnt work and thats why the 512 did.  They are just dumbasses that want out money dude......i got around it by fucking around on the computer with it, but its real difficult and takes alot of patience.  pce

I Bought my Lg Cu500 today. I am in loveeeee withi it. However whenever i call even inside my home to someone in the house. They say that i sound underwaterish, and like i'm blipping in and out. I tried to turn off my 3g but it only last for at the most 5 seconds before my phone call "went bad again" does anyone know how to fix this permenatly?

Can i get a reception upgrade?
Can i do anything within my phone?
Do i have to go back to the store?
Or is the phone just a piece of crud?

I have been using  1gb and 512mb microSD cards made by pqi for 2 months and no problems whatsoever on my LGCU500. I wasn't aware that there were any problems with memory cards anyway, but I moved mp3s to card, stuck it in phone, and card and songs were all recognized. Both newegg.com and digi4me.com have these cards and they are so cheap to boot.

My 2cents worth.
As with Michelle, I'm NOT using a SanDisk card.  I'm using something called a Patriot 1Gb from Fry's electronics.  Works Perfectly.  Purchased a USB cable from http://www.bargaincell.com for $9.99.  works for mass storage and synch with the infamous Australian TU500 s/w.  My only issue is sending SMS's from the PC through the phone.  My VisualGSM doesn't work with the CU500 like it did with the LGC2000.
CINGULAR CUSTOMERS!! You DO have voice dial available!!!!!!  Log into http://www.cingular.com/learn/basics/choosing-features-services/voicedial.jsp  and have fun.  Much much better than the voice dial on the device as this doesn't have to be trained.  I've been using this for years on my old AT&T system before converting to Cingular.  It's now been absorbed into the Cingular sphere of products.
Hope some of this helps you folks....  Great Thread

I bought one fo these lg cu 500's , WHAT A DISASTER!!! 3 days to get is unlocked, the thing goes into
some strange mode where it wont call out unless you wipe everything and do a hard reset ,dosen't interface with computer or outlook, numerous small glitches, no factory supplied cable. I'm tired of spending hours to troubleshoot this piece of crap.    Got a razor, worked well out of the box does everything you could ever want it to do and more, no wonder its the best selling cell phone.

This phone is retarded!!!  It constantly says that it is connected to a head set and then it will call my friends randomly!  It called my girlfriend 20 times in less than an hour.  She was pissed.
DON'T GET THIS PHONE

AnonymousMar 6, 2007 at 23:38

Here is how to fix the whole USB problem:

open the phone and type in 277634#*#
Select #4 "port settings"
then select #4 "mass storage"

Then press the red phone button.

Connect the phone to your computer. You will be prompted to install drivers. Even in XP, you have to install the drivers -- it won't work without them. Tell the wizard to automatically find the drivers; even without the CD, it will find the drivers.

Then, if you have a card installed in the phone, it will come up as a mass storage drive. You can drag and drop from there.

Note: you have to have a microSD card installed to transfer files via USB.

Thanks to all the useful comments here, I was able to a) get the right microSD card (SanDisk), b) get the right USB cable (direct from LG), c) get the right software (LG's Aussie site), and d) ultimately connect my PC to the phone.

Here's how it worked in my case:
- Installed the Australian software
- Connected the USB cable to the phone (turned on)
- PC immediately recognized the microSD card as a disk drive
- When I "exited" from that connection (a screen pops up on the phone to let you do this), I started the Aussie LG synch program. This established the com port connection to the phone's internal memory and the smart card (not the microSD card).
- Used the phone manager and desktop software to synch info with my PC

Note: The only little "gotcha" in all this was that I first tried to use the synch software while the PC was viewing the microSD card as a disk drive. But you can't use the USB cable for two things at once; it's one or the other. So you have to "exit" the disk drive connection (via the phone) before you start the synch software, which works with the phone memory (not with the microSD card).

Hope that's clear. Again, thanks to everyone for the good suggestions.

I purchased an LGCU500.  I also purchased a ScanDisk microSD/Transflash Adapter.  I used my ScanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 Reader/Writer to download mp3 files to the card and then installed the card into the phone.  I didn't have any problems with getting the phone to recognize the card.  The problem I am having is getting the player to play the entire mp3 files that are not recorded for ringtones.  It starts out beautiful and stops part way into the song.  The carrier is clueless as to how to fix it.  There was anoter customer in the store today that was having the same problem.  Does anyone know a fix for this issue?  Any suggestions offered are appreciated.

In my lg cu500 the kingston 1GB works fine, never had any problem. I got one of those 1GB pny from newegg and no such luck, i've ordered a SanDisk 1GB to that can work with my wife's lg cu500

karincheerMar 29, 2007 at 16:53

Steve,
I've had this phone for months now and couldn't get it to synch to the computer. After reading your suggestions, re. aussie site, downloading manager, etc., it FINALLY worked! I was having the same issues as others.....computer recognizing it as USB modem, etc.
THANKS!

GilMar 31, 2007 at 21:41

as of right now, the CU500 does not support 2 gig or larger miniSD cards, the card has to be supported by the phone to work properly..........i cant send files from my laptop to my phone, but i can send files from my phone to my laptop, its pissing me off!!!!

I had success transferring both mp3 and aac (mp4) audio files from my Mac OS X v 1.3.9 PowerBook via USB to a SanDisk 1GB microSD. Instead of trying to synch with the CU500 I opted to use a SanDisk USB "SecureMate" SDDR-33, which I already had, to write directly onto the 1GB microSD card.

First attach the USB SecureMate and wait until the green light glows steadily. Then put the 1 GB  microSD card into the SanDisk microSD adapter and insert the adapter (which holds the microSD card) into the SecureMate. A disk image of the "NO NAME" microSD is automatically mounted onto the Mac desktop. Open "NO NAME" and create a directory called "Music" at the root level. Drag mp3 and/or aac audio files into "Music".

Interestingly, when I put the microSD back into the CU500, only mp3 files are automatically found by the Music Player. I have to navigate to "My Stuff" and select "Memory Card" and then "Music" to get to the aac files I had ripped from a CD. I am able to play the aac files out of the "My Stuff" directory, but thus far have been unable to have them show up in the Music Player list.

I just got my CU500 yesterday, and really like it BUT... I'm a Mac user.

Am I completely out of luck with getting my Mac to see this? If I get a SanDisk card (and a card reader) and format it to Mac will it work with the phone? I admit I only did a scan though all of the posts, so I may have missed something, but I'm hoping someone knows a way around this problem.

I bought a Sandisk 2G memory card for my CU500.  I got the phone to recognize the card, but I can't seem to save pics on the memory card or move existing pics from the phone to the memory card.  any ideas other  than buying a 1G memory card?

Can anyone tell me how I can put music on my LG Muziq? I have iTunes but I just can't figure it out. My phone says the USB cable is connected, but it's just not doing anything. Thank you for your help.

mariaAug 30, 2007 at 12:23

got my 1st lg cu500 in march, got the 2nd in may.  The phone is on but i can't call anyone and if anyone calls me it goes straight to voice mail.  However, if they leave a voice mail i never get it.  The only way to fix it is to take out the battery.  I also just got a new battery 5 days ago.  has anyone else had this problem?

BassGirlSep 4, 2007 at 06:56

I got a 1GB SANDISK. It worked fine up until about 2 months ago. I only had the LGCU500 since Feb. and the card too. The problems were my stuff would disappear! I would have to turn the phone off or take the battery and card out and put it back and it would come back. I could tolerate that-it only happened like once every 2 weeks or so. Last nite it did it but this time nothing worked. I tried putting my card in hubby's phone (same phone) and his card in mine. Nothing. In fact at first I thought I messed his phone up too! He lost his songs and pictures, but lucky his came back. Mine is not coming back. I had like 84 ringtones that I carefully and times takenly picked out and sent to my phone. Now I have 7. Last nite I had 30 something. What is going on???? I tried everything. Every suggestion I read in this forem and everything. NOTHING. I am going to go by Cingular later today, but meanwhile if anybody knows WHAT is going on, I'd appreciate! I am getting highly upset. I didn't have a good week last week and now this one is turning cruddy too! :( Thank you ever so kindly.
PS I DO love the phone all in all...

Very useful files search engine. Indexoffiles.com is a search engine designed to search files in various file sharing and uploading sites.

I dropped my phone the other day and now the headphone logo is showing on my screen.  Now i can't hear my voicemails or hear my calls.  How do I turn the headphone feature off.  Where can i find this feature?  I've looked everywhere

DiuJan 17, 2010 at 00:59

It is a little blocky and rectangular, with angled edges. It weighs around 3 ounces and is quite comfortable when held next to the ear.
